W pierwszej zostanie przedstawione zagadnienie łacińskiej psalmistyki poetyckiej na tle tendencji literackich i badań biblistycznych renesansowego humanizmu, a więc kolejno w osobnych rozdziałach w kontekście: 1) adaptowania psalmów do grecko-rzymskiej tradycji poetyckiej, 2) teorii parafrazy od starożytności do epoki renesansu, 3) interpretowania i translacji tekstów biblijnych w renesansie, 4) inspirowanej Psałterzem praktyki parafrastycznej poetów nowołacińskich XVI i XVII wieku.
W części drugiej zostaną omówione niektóre sposoby poetyckiej interpretacji biblijnych psalmów na przykładzie utworów Stanisława Hozjusza, Klemensa Janickiego, Laurentiusa Fabriciusa, Paulusa Vekenstieda, Joachima Balckiusa, Caspara Cunradusa i Andreasa Calagiusa. W rozdziale pierwszym przedstawiona zostanie ogólna wymowa, struktura, forma gatunkowa i metryczna wybranych utworów.
Summary
This book, based on my doctoral disertation (finished in 2006) is entitled: Poetical Psalm Paraphrases in Latin in 16th and 17th centuries. It is literary history work, dealing with neo-Latin literature.I have attempted to realize two distinct analitical purposes and I devoted two parts of the disertation to each of them respectively. The first one, comprising the firts part of my thesis, was presenting the scope, extent, nature and character of poetical Psalm paraphrases in Latin in 16th and 17th century in the light of biblical studies and literary trends of the Renaissance humanism. In this part I showed three chapters: The first chapter is about interpretation and translation of biblical texts in Renaisaince. The second presents adaptation of Psalms to Greek- Roman poetical tradition, the third depicts theory of the paraphrase from Antiquity to Renaissance, fourth shows the paraphrastic practice inspired by Psalter by neo-Latin poets of 16th and 17th centuries.
The second part, on the other hand, attempted at showing some ways in which the biblical source material was poetically interpreted on the basis of chosen paraphrases, in my view both interesting and representative of this literary genre. In this part my aim was to present methods in which the chosen poets adapted the Old Testament Psalms to their contemporary reality, christian mentality, religious needs and individual artistic preferences. What was important to me, was discovery of individual features of each paraphrase and assesing their literary value. In the firt part I have presented the Latin poetic psalms writing in the context of biblical studies and literary trends of the Renaissance humanism, in the consecutive separate chapters in the context of 1) adaptation of psalms to the Greek-Roman poetic tradition; 2) theory of the pharaphrase from Antiquity to Renaissance; 3) interpretation and translation of biblical texts in the Renaissance; 4) the paraphrastic practice inspired by Psalter by neo-Latin poets of 16th and 17th centrury. In the second part I have described some ways of poetical interpretation of biblical psalms on the exemple of Stanislaus Hosius', Clemens Ianitius' Laurentius Fabricius', Paulus Vekenstied's, Ioachim Balckius', Caspar Cunradus' and Andreas Calagius' works, poets from Poland, Silesia, Pomerania and Germany. In the first chapter I wrote about basic literary problems like composition, character and metrical form of chosen paraphrases. I also considered the genesis of these works and important information about their authors, especially in the case of less known poets, whose bibliographical data is hard to find in contemporary studies. In the second chapter I described the indiviualization, christianisation and religious sense of the paraphrases. We mustn't forget that these paraphases were written in the times of Reformation and Counter-Reformation, the times of great polemics and lively discussions on the field of religion. All that was reflected in Psalm paraphrases. I have given exemples of all changes, which are modifications influenced by religious ideology but also author's subjective reflections, verses written "on the occasion" or autobiographical elements. The third chapter was devoted to the most important stylistic and syntactic devices which appear in the paraphrases.
The basic aim of my book was to depict a living presence of poetical Psalm paraphrases in Latin in the culture of the Renaisance humanism. In my work I tried to prove that although, they are the imitative literature, they display certain creative feathures and emulative tendencies, because every poet, acording to his sensivity, imagination, way of thinking and also talent, paraphased biblical Psalms updating their sense to the new times. From this perspective we can consider Latin Psalm paraphrases to be one of the most interesting and valuable achievements of Renaissance religious poetry. Moreover, in the first annex I presented an index of most authors and works from 16th and 17th century with the addition of metrical form used, place and dates of all editions, what was able to to estabish with the help of available bibliographies and my library resarch, which was my humble input to the current state of research.
